I am actually enjoying the series and will read the next installment. The book was a fun, quick read and while I found the main character to be rather whiny he does seem to be growing. The world is believable and the magic system makes sense. The characters are well written and I care about them. I would have given the book a 4 star rating except for the following...Firstly, I feel there is a need for a little more editing. Other reviewers have noted the deficiencies in the writing so I won't dwell on them. The negatives that I will focus on are technical ones. For example, the author has a nurse state that he will check on Steve (Marcus' friend and a minotaur) who is gravely injured and receiving large doses of intravenous pain medications in a 'couple of hours'. As an RN myself I can assure you that no nurse would stay away for a couple of hours. The standard period of time for a medical surgical floor is one hour and units with more seriously ill patients check in a lot more than that. Also, the protagonist stated that he drew his Glock and assured himself that it was in 'condition one'. As a shooter with some knowledge about firearms (certainly nothing at the level with which the author has as a former Marine) I have heard that term used with the Glock, just with handguns with external hammers and safeties such as the 1911. This a Glock you just do a chamber check. While this is a mild critique I have been reading so much bad writing by authors who blatantly know nothing about firearms and apparently refuse to research the subject that I wanted to bring it up. The mistakes are minor and may, indeed, not be mistakes rather the author is using terms in a way I am not familiar with.
I can happily endorse the series and will continue reading but I would really like for the author to pick up his game a little.
EDIT: Changed some stuff. Initially I feel I came across rather pompous and I certainly did not mean to.

Summoned Chaos The Shifter Chronicles Book 2 eBook Joshua Roots Reviews
I really appreciated the read. I was captivated by the characters as well as the plot. Fun fantasy book. Looking forward to the next volume.
Wonderful! You get sucked into the world of Marcus Shifter, and Roots has a wonderful writing style. Really hoping and looking forward to more from him.
Poor editing, but I don't blame the author (publishers mess-up).
I am still enjoying this world. Be warned that Marcus spends much of this book feeling sorry for himself which is annoying. The redeeming feature is Steve tells him so. The conflict of skilled v normal was reasonable.
I like that the second book started with the ending of the first. I will be reading the third book which sound like it will take off right after this one in time. Good story, well written characters and a nicely created world. All around a good reading experience well worth the time and money.
After Undead Chaos I was somewhat afraid that the second volume will not be on par with it. Luckily I was wrong. Summoned Chaos makes a sound addition to the series. Though, the plot at points seem a bit inconsistent the author manages it quite well and it does not affect the general impression - which is really good - given by his work.
The book seems to be a final in the series as it concludes most (if not all) open questions that stayed after the first part. Which is good. I personally hate series dragged forcefully by adding more and more twisted/evil/powerful enemies.
Roots returns Marcus Shifter to us in a larger, darker, and more complex story that definitely satisfies, albeit with a dash of convolution. If you enjoyed the first book in the series, you will likely enjoy this second book.
We get to have a deeper, darker, and more dangerous mystery, much more fighting, more characters, more relationship changes, and a heaping of politics. The story is a good one, and so is the character development. There were a few twists and turns that had me confused, and just a teensy bit more grammatical knots than the first time, but overall I was really quite satisfied after the ride was over.
I hope to see more books in this series, and I've definitively put Mr. Roots on my "Watch whatever this author does" list.
In my review of the first book of the Marcus Shifter series, I likened the characters to Dresden Files and Simon Green's Drood or Nightside books. This one seems to hang in there along that same genre, but not as strongly as the first one did. I think that is because Marcus goes into the ranks and file of the magically community, rather than as a freelance. I think the character would be stronger sticking to the outside looking in. I am sure he will screw something up eventually and get booted out.
One thing I really like about this story is that Marcus' family is loving and supportive and he never blames them for any of the things that happen, happened or will happen to him. If he's a f-up, it is because he did it hisself.
In the book, you seem more of the same action as Undead Chaos, along with a love interest being developed, old friendships reasserting themselves, and enemies revealed. Love Steve, the minotaur character.
