I found the relentless sexism and slut shaming obnoxious. Even characters that supposedly had an 'enlightened' background assume that main character is a prostitute. The knight protector guy has no sympathy for the fact that he has kidnapped her into a life of being mentally tormented by his creepy god, and then creepily stalks her in the bath so he can see her naked. Also, he refuses to even let her chose her clothes because she sassed him. Nice maturity for a guy who is decades/centuries older than she is.

Also, it is deeply creepy that she is possessed and used as essentially a sex-puppet for Loku to use to seduce her kidnapper. Of course the god has the maturity of a frat boy.

A Soul For Trouble The Soulbearer Trilogy Crista McHugh 9781468158748 Books Reviews

*****SPOILERS READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL*****

I remember the first time I read this series. I stayed up all night reading. This time around I took a day per book to read. Partially because I was already busy, but also because the draw to finish the food wasn't there. I did like the book. The world is interesting, and the characters fun. Loku is hilarious, so 'listening' to his dialogue with Arden is fun. Dev and Kell drive me a little nuts though. But at least Dev's character is consistent throughout. Duty bound to a fault. Kell... well he just reminds me of a love sick puppy. First he doesn't trust her (till he sniffs her). Then chases Arden around like she is a bone, trying to seduce her, but not because he loves her but because she is useful. Pretends not to understand/doesn't believe Dev and Arden when they are trying to tell his things about magic that he does not understand when he KNOWS that he doesn't understand magic, and it is better to trust someone that does. Then in a play fight (yes still going with the puppy thing) he decides he is in love with her and then becomes her best friend. WoMAN's best friend. Get it?? Then Dev... consistently regretting what he thinks is the right choice at every turn. He chooses not to be with Arden, the regrets that decision literally the second that he makes that decision, and this is consistent though out. Arden needs to calm down and LISTEN, or ask if she is not sure how someone is feeling, not just bolting every chance she gets.
This is almost 4 Stars. I loved the character of 'Trouble' and her internal interactions with Loku. In fact, my favorite part of the story was Arden and Loku's constant chatter. I also liked Dev's character. I'm kind of a romantic, I guess, cause I liked their chemistry together. I also like the sword and sorcery angle, as I like the idea of a supposedly ordinary girl with hidden magical powers. That's right up my alley!

So why only 3 Stars? For one thing, I am so tired of 'love triangles' in an otherwise good story. I hate all the angst the girl has to feel because she's madly "in lust" with both guys. And of course the one has to hide his feelings for her which causes constant misunderstandings about his love and pushes her to the other guy. And while we're at it, I find all the constant lustful bodice-ripping type of romance disgusting and boring. I actually skipped over most of the heavy panting and shaky knees scenes. I'd have liked this much better if each of the trio hadn't had to fight to control their lust every single time they were together. Gag!

For another thing, I do not see why a bad guy has to be written as such a bloodthirsty sexual degenerate in order to show us how evil he is. I can see he's a bad person from his murdering an entire town and turning them into zombies. I don't need to read so graphically how he rapes girls and murders them in order to steal their souls.

I've read the author's "Elgean Chronicles" and really liked it, but as much as I liked Trouble's character I don't plan to read further in this series.
When I started this book, I was expecting another young adult fantasy, some of which are admittedly quite excellent. Instead, I found a thrilling, exciting adult fantasy involving complex characters and a stellar storyline. Arden, also known as Trouble, is possessed by Loku, the God of Chaos, and faces a series of unexpected adventures. Loku is crude, but rather amusing. Arden is an untrained and innocent witch in a country that has outlawed magic and believes every independent woman is a prostitute. This is not a kingdom concerned with women's rights. She faces new challenges, including admirers, antagonists, betrayal, and an evil necromancer with an army of the undead. The lure of the book is in discovering if and how she can navigate these situations. This novel is amazingly addictive. It is well-written and properly edited (such a welcome, unexpected relief!). I thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to buy the next book in the trilogy. I highly recommend this book even if fantasy is not your first choice in genres.
I went into this book looking for a good standard fantasy yarn, but felt I was reading a lot more of a young-adult romance fantasy instead. The setting seemed interesting, the characters are fairly fun to read, but the love triangle and sexual tension between the characters repeats over, and over, and over again. It's relentless. I wanted more details on the villains, on the history of the conflict, on the past of the protector character, and many other things. The trickster god is a character I always enjoy, but this one seems purely focused on sexual matters, why does he not needle the characters about money, or politics, or religion, or academics, or magic, or anything other than how funny it would be if they had sex. Of course no one actually has sex in the book (so that their relationships could actually move forward), it's just all tension and suspense with no changes to look forward to. It's a solid read, the author has good ideas, writes well, the dialogue is solid, but I would avoid this if you want a standard fantasy story and pick it up if you enjoy romance fantasy, with an emphasis on the romance.
